Savoring Kindergarten

One of my Monday kindergarten classes won a piñata for having good behavior all semester long. While walking the kids outside, I turned around and walked backwards to monitor the behavior of all the kids in line. The little boy who was line leader looked up at me and said in a tone of voice that made it seem like he was seeing me for the first time (and with the accompanying eyebrow-crinkled facial expression), “Oh, you’re pretty!”

I’m collecting all of these moments now to look back upon when I’m old and need a boost of self-esteem. One day they’ll be saying “You know what? You look like my grandma!” and I’ll be replying, “Oh yeah? That’s not what your dad said when HE was in kindergarten!  …punk.”
